For years now Safari has opened a blank page when ever I download an item. I have the default setup where my files is saved to the downloads folder, but I don't understand why a blank Safari window is opened. It was never a big deal until recently where my work flow has changed and I now use Safari to access my company's e-mail. I now have multiple blank Safari windows I have to manually close and it is starting to become a pain. Why is this happening and what can I do to stop this?

I've seen this for as long as I've had Macs on the internet. I think it is poor/lazy page design, not a hardware or software issue in your computer.
Apparently, the coding of some links on a site will take the user to a blank page the then the download begins. I saw the same thing on a Windoze computer only last week.
Rather than a regular click, you might try a right-click (or control-click if you have a single-button mouse) and chose "save as. " or one of the other options from the contextual menu. That might override the blank page loading.
